Obituary: Norman Nelson

A memorial service for Norman H. Nelson will be held at a later date. In accordance with his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. The Runge Mortuary, Davenport, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mr. Nelson died Monday, June 3, 2019, in Davenport.

Norman Nelson was born in Chicago.

He served in the U.S. Navy and served four years in the Korean War.

He married Beverly Dowler in 1953.

He spent 15 years in the gasoline and auto repair business. In 1968, he went to work for U.S. Steel Corp. and was transferred to Bettendorf, where the family lived until he was transferred to St. Louis. He retired in 1987 and moved to New Bern, N.C.

He acquired a U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license and delivered yachts up and down the Eastern Coast for 10 years.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, River Bend Country Club, River Bend Boat and Fishing Club, The Elks, and was one of eight founding members of the New Bern Yacht Club.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Bruce (Shari) Nelson, Bettendorf; his grandsons, Benjamin (Candi), Nathan, and Perry; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Carolyn Lowery of Illinois.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gregg Nelson.

Memorials may be made to the family at 3035 Oxford Dr., Bettendorf, IA 52722. Memorials will be donated to local flood relief in Davenport in Norman’s name.
