Leland “Rusty” Borland, 86, died Tuesday, June 18, 2019. In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held.
He was born Oct. 16, 1932, in Liberty, Neb., the son of James and Ella Borland. He graduated from high school in Shenandoah, Iowa. He attended Iowa State University, and received a bachelor of science degree from Northwest Missouri State University. He earned a master’s degree in mathematics from Central Michigan University.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He taught for 38 years, including in Denver and Colorado Springs, Colo., Neola and DeWitt, Iowa, and retired from the Des Moines Public Schools.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Carol; a daughter, Kelly (Phil) Bertram, Normal, Ill.; a son, John (Kim) Borland, Chicago; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James.
