Obituary: John Moffit

John A. Moffit, 87, of DeWitt, formerly of Mechanicsville, died Wednesday, July 24, 2019, at Genesis Medical Center, Davenport. Per his wishes, his body has been donated to The University of Iowa. No funeral will be held, and military services will be held at a later date. The Runge Mortuary, Davenport, is assisting the family with arrangements.

John Moffit was born Feb. 20, 1932, in Mechanicsville, the son of Maurice and Mary Margaret (Fisher) Moffit. He graduated from Mechanicsville High School.

He served in the U.S. Air Force.

He married Gwen Watson; they later divorced. He later married Carmella “Jean” Jacobsen in 2005.

He farmed on the family Century Farm. He was also a private pilot.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Experimental Aircraft Assoc., and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mechanicsville.

Survivors include a daughter, Jill (Greg) Williams, Monticello; two sons, Scott and Jay Moffit, both of Mechanicsville; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Janell (Dave) Copsin of California.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles and Bill Moffit.

Memorials may be made to a charity or church of the donor’s choice.
