Obituary: John Hoelzen

A funeral service for John H. Hoelzen, 76, of Davenport, was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 26, at Grace Lutheran Church, Davenport. Burial was in Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation was Wednesday, April 25, from 4-7 p.m. at the Runge Mortuary, Davenport.

Mr. Hoelzen died Saturday, April 21, 2018, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

John Hoelzen was born Sept. 5, 1941, in Quincy, Ill. He graduated from Quincy High School and later achieved a bachelor of arts degree from Central Methodist College, majoring in economics and minoring in history.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. While stationed in Korea, he served in the People to People program and taught English and economics to middle school and university students.

He married Sandra Jager in 1967.

He retired from Tacom, United States Army, in 2005.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, the German American Society, Davenport American Legion Post 26, and a past member of the Davenport Elks Club, Renaissance, and No Name Dance Clubs. He coached Dad’s Club softball and was involved in the Y-Indian Princess program.

His hobbies were ballroom dancing, telling jokes, playing checkers, camping, canoeing, fishing, and tying flies.

Survivors include his wife; his daughters, Heather Hoelzen and Christine (David) Fowler; a granddaughter, Amanda Fowler; and a sister, Mary Anne (Ron) Christianson.
