Obituary: Joan Smith

A Service of Christian Burial for Joan Smith, 89, of DeWitt, was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. Visitation was from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial was in Clinton Lawn Cemetery. The Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, assisted the family with arrangements.

Mrs. Smith died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

Joan Rutledge was born June 29, 1930, in Clinton, the daughter of Ralph and Susan (Mosher) Rutledge. She graduated from Clinton High School.

She married Fred Smith on Sept. 2, 1951, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound.

In addition to raising her family, she worked as a secretary and a retail clerk at various DeWitt businesses.

She was a longtime and active member of Grace Lutheran Church in DeWitt and the Grace Lutheran Women. She served as librarian, recording financial secretary, and volunteered in many other ways. She was also a member of the Ci-Ed Women’s Federated Club. She knitted hundreds of baby caps for hospitals over the years.

Her hobbies were reading, flowers, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband; her children, Craig Smith, DeWitt, and Susan (Brian) Klever, Long Grove; her grandchildren, Melanie (Curt) Westphal, Nick Smith (Amy VenHorst), Melissa (Jeremy) Klingaman, Emily (Bill) Gronewold, Matt (Robyn) Klever, Andrew Klever, and Laura Klever; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Dean; a sister, Zeta Seymour; and a brother, Harold Rutledge.
