Obituary: Irene Duwa

A funeral mass for Irene Duwa, 95, of Lost Nation, was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28, at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Lost Nation. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Lost Nation. Visitation was Sunday, Oct. 27, from 3-6 p.m. at the church, where a rosary was recited at 2:30 p.m. Additional visitation was one hour prior to Mass on Monday at the church. The Lahey & Dawson Funeral Home, Lost Nation, assisted the family with arrangements.

Mrs. Duwa died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019, at The University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.

Irene Gingerich was born June 23, 1924, in Johnson County, the daughter of David and Nettie (Zager) Gingerich. She graduated from Oxford High School.

She married Melvin Duwa on Oct. 28, 1943, at the Army Air Force Base in Albuquerque, N.M.

She worked in Civil Services and in the cafeteria at the Lost Nation School for many years.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Lost Nation, a former member of the Altar and Rosary Society, and a former Lost Nation Legion Auxiliary member.

Her hobbies were cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, ceramics, traveling, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband; her children, LaVonne (Gary) Gleason, Bettendorf, Karen (Jim) Hamann, Long Grove, Vicki (Tom) Shady, West Liberty, and Tim (Jackie) Duwa, Lost Nation; her grandchildren, Mark, Jason, Michele, Ken, Bonnie, Renee, Joe, Jeremy, Kim, Matthew, and Marisa; 18 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and her daughters-in-law, Kathy (Jerry) Morrison, Marion, and Melodee Duwa (Richard Shewmake), Eldridge.

She was preceded in death by her sons, David and Daniel; a granddaughter, Angie; a great-grandson, Tyler; a sister, Alice Zook; and her brothers, Olin, Delbert, and Lester Gingerich.
