Obituary: Chris Blake

A Mass of Christian Burial for Chris Johannes Blake, 93, of Davenport, was held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 30, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial was in the Maysville Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Dixon American Legion. Visitation was Sunday, July 29, from 3-7 p.m. at the church. The Bentley Funeral Home, Durant, assisted the family with arrangements.

Mr. Blake died Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

Chris Blake was born June 5, 1925, on the family farm in Scott County, the son of Henry and Adolfina (Badtram) Blake.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a Sgt. 1st Class.

He married Deloris Van Den Berghe on Jan. 24, 1953, in Davenport.

In early years, he drove a fuel truck for Consumer’s Petroleum. In 1953, he took over the family farm and continued to work on his Century Farm his entire life.

He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church and the Dixon American Legion Post #353. He served on the Board of Directors for Swiss Valley Farms, River Valley Coop, and the Mississippi Valley Fair. He also served as a 4-H leader and supervised the MVF dairy show for many years. He was a member of numerous card clubs.

His hobbies were playing the accordion, polka music, Oliver tractors, Holstein cows, eating ice cream, bowling, and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife; his children, Karen (Lonny) Ganzer and Keith (Colette) Blake, all of Eldridge, Roger (Jodi) Blake, Davenport, Randy (Cindy) Blake, LeClaire, Rick Blake, Long Grove, Kathy (Geoff) Polzin, Donahue, Kevin (Cindy) Blake, Walcott, and Karol (Keith) Martz, Blue Grass; 23 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Anita (George) Christoff, Davenport; and his brothers, Henry Blake Jr. and Donavan (Carolyn) Blake, all of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Sallie Blake, and a sister-in-law, Virginia Blake.
