Obituary: Charlene Poffenberger

A memorial service for Charlene E. Poffenberger, 79, of Davenport, was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation was two hours prior to the service on Thursday at the funeral home. Per her wishes, cremation rites were accorded.

Ms. Poffenberger died Sunday, May 12, 2019, at her home.

Charlene Estes was born June 19, 1939, in Trenton, Mo., the daughter of Charlie and Elizabeth (Wooderson) Estes. She graduated from Davenport High School in 1957.

She married Alvin Poffenberger in May of 1964. They later divorced.

She began her work career at Northwestern Bell as a telephone operator. She held many positions until her retirement.

She volunteered for the Davenport Community School System, where she tutored elementary students in reading and math. She was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, where she spent countless hours volunteering to help others.

Her hobbies were quilting and cross stitching, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her children, Carrie Howard, Blue Grass, and Kelly Fromi, Davenport; her grandchildren, Sydney and Cory Howard, and Abbey and Tyler Fromi; and her siblings, Carol (Richard) Abbott and Frieda (Terry) Foland.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn Jackson, and her brothers, W.H. Estes and Robert Estes.
