Obituary: Carol Selby

Visitation for Carol Jean Gibson Selby, 84, of Davenport, was held from noon – 2 p.m. Friday, June 7, at the Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Per her wishes, cremation rites were accorded, and inurnment was in Oakdale Cemetery.

Mrs. Selby died Sunday, June 2, 2019, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

Carol Gibson was born April 3, 1935, in Waterloo, the daughter of William and Helen (Lewis) Gibson. She graduated from Waterloo West High School and attended Grinnell College.

She was formerly married to Charles Selby, who preceded her in death.

In earlier years, she worked for F.W. Woolworth Co., Black’s Department Store, and Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. After her marriage, she became a homemaker until her children were in school. She was then employed by the Davenport Community School District as an administrative assistant, retiring after 31 years of service.

She was a member of the Iowa Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Davenport Area Retired School Personnel Association, and a former member of DAR in Waterloo, DAEOP, NAEOP.

Her hobbies were fishing and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her daughters, Deborah Eitel, Davenport, and Leanne (Darryl), Bettendorf; a son, William Selby, Lawrence-ville, Ga.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Col. Richard Jones, USAF Rtr., Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.

In addition to her ex-husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Richie Eitel; and a sister, Virginia Jones.
