Obituary: Bernard Wanzek

Bernard I. “Bernie” Wanzek, age 69, of Clinton, passed away Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospitals.  A Mass was celebrated at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, at Prince of Peace Parish, Clinton.  Visitation was Friday, Oct. 6, at the Pape Funeral Home.  Burial was in St. Boniface Cemetery.

Bernie was born in Clinton on April 27, 1948, the son of Joseph and Mildred (Boehmer) Wanzek.  He graduated from Preston High School in 1966.  He attended Clinton Community College.  Bernie served with the United States Army in Vietnam from January 1969 to January 1970.  He married Verna Schaefer on Jan. 10, 1970, in Clinton.  Bernie was employed at E.I. DuPont, retiring in 2014.  He also owned and operated BVL Quick Shop in Clinton for several years. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish and the Preston American Legion. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities.  Bernie was an avid hunter, outdoorsman, and Iowa Hawkeye fan.  He enjoyed photography, putting in food plots and going to Iowa Hawkeye football games with his grandson Hunter.

Bernie is survived by his wife Verna; his daughter Lisa (Dan) Collins of Eldridge; two grandchildren, Hunter and Riley; two sisters, Mary Wimpey of Bowling Green, Ky., and Jacinta (Steve) Clark of Wichita, Kan.; four brothers, Eymard (Donna) Wanzek of Clinton, Gerard Wanzek of Preston, Joseph (Joan) Wanzek of Urbandale, and Raymond Wanzek of Preston; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Philomena; and an infant brother, Francis.  Memorials may be made to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com.
