Gale Allen Gates, 88, left for greener pastures on June 4, 2023. Gale was born on April 20, 1935, in Iowa City, the son of Ivan N. and Frieda Rehwoldt Gates. He attended West Branch High School and graduated in 1954.
Gale married Sandra Madsen on Feb. 20, 1955, and they had four children together. They later divorced. Gale was a farmer and worked various jobs right up until 2020. He was a hardworking man who took great pride in his work.
Gale loved his Cadillacs, country western music, two-step dancing, gold jewelry, traveling, flying his airplane, entertaining people at the lake house, and always sharing stories about his past time.
Gale is survived by his three daughters, Scherie Gates, Linda Stoolman (Kevin) of West Branch, and Cindy Kusick of North Liberty; a son, Dean Gates (Mary) of Rochester; and his sister, Oneth Lovetinsky of Iowa City. He was very proud of his 10 grandchildren, Luke Jeffries (Allison), Jacquie Albrecht (Brandon), Curt Jeffries (Kellie), Patrick Gates (Bobby Jo), Howie Gates (Tara), Katie Dauber (Ryan), Rachel Morrison (Todd), Becca Haganman (Kyle), Allison Kusick and Jessica Kusick and 18 great-grandchildren.
Gale was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ferral and Claire Gates, and a grandson, Chad Gates.
In keeping with his wishes, Gale has donated his body to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program. No funeral services will be held at this time, but a celebration of life will be at a later date. His family and friends will always remember his infectious laugh.
