Bob Williams to note 95th birthday with family

Bob Williams of Long Grove will celebrate his 95th birthday with family. Being an avid reader, Bob would be overjoyed to receive birthday wishes from former students, colleagues, neighbors and friends. Cards may be sent to: Mr. Bob Williams, PO Box 56, Long Grove, IA 52756.

Bob was born Sept. 16, 1924, in Des Moines. He married Mary Blazer on Sept. 9, 1944. She passed away in 2012. This year would have been their 75th wedding anniversary.

He served in the Army Infantry during World War II. He was wounded by a sniper’s bullet in Germany in 1945 and received a Purple Heart.

Bob was a teacher and coach for 38 years, and made lasting impressions on students at Iowa Falls School, Davenport High School, Davenport West High School, and Palmer Junior College. He retired in 1987.

Bob’s hobbies include reading several newspapers daily, and chatting with friends, neighbors, and anyone he meets while out on his daily routine. Most recently, Bob has been globally recognized in an ad campaign by the Hershey’s Company for his spirit and acts of kindness in gifting giant-size chocolate bars to friends, neighbors and people he just met. It’s estimated Bob has given over 6,000 chocolate bars over the past decade! Bob has also made numerous donations to Alan Shepard Elementary School in Long Grove.

He is the father of Tony (Mary) Williams, Jeff (Cathy) Williams, and Ann (Vern) Hill. He has four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
