| NORTH SCOTT WRESTLING Ryan, Perrin and Gillmor are MAC champs Assumption captures team title; Lancers finish third
By: Scott Campbell NSP Editor
BURLINGTON - Ordinarily, scoring 201 points in a wrestling tournament is a sure-fire way to secure a team championship.
Such wasn't the case for North Scott at Saturday's Mississippi Athletic Conference tournament.
The Lancers, despite being the only team to have all 14 wrestlers claim spots on the podium, and for the second year in a row bringing home three individual championships, came up short as they finished a somewhat disappointing third.
Davenport Assumption, by advancing seven wrestlers to the championship round, and by crowning three champions, claimed the team title with 238.5 points; while Bettendorf, which matched the Knights point for point in the finals, finished second with 211.5 points.
"I guess I kind of have mixed emotions," said Lancer coach Eugene Kreiter. "We really started out strong and were in first place after the first round, but then we couldn't keep up our intensity. We didn't have a great second round (only advancing four to the finals), and then won only two of our 10 third- and fifth-place matches.
"I guess on a bright note, and compared to last year, we showed improvement. A year ago we finished with 139 points and finished fifth. This year we scored 201, and last yera Davenport West won by scoring 195.
"We had people telling us we did a great job, but truthfully, we went in expecting to win," he continued. "That was our goal and we didn't accomplish it. Granted, our goal at the beginning of the season was to finish in the top three, and we did that, but as the season progressed we changed our goals and thought we could bring home a MAC championship. That didn't happen, and now we have to refocus and gear up for a district title, as well as qualifying as many guys for state as we can."
While a team championship wasn't in the cards the Lancers did bring home a trio of individual titles, with sophomore Adam Perrin (112) and junior Walt Gillmor (171) claiming their second straight MAC crowns, while freshman Connor Ryan (103) climbed the podium for the first time.
Gillmor, who pinned all three of his opponents in either the first or second period, was dominant, and could easily have been named the meet's Outstanding Wrestler, but lost out on that honor to Davenport Central senior Tommy Mirocha.
Perrin and Ryan were just as impressive. Ryan prevailed in what was likely the day's most difficult weight class, where two state qualifiers from a year ago finished fifth and sixth. Perrin won by a pin and technical fall before being awarded the title when Clinton's Drake Chase couldn't take the mat because of a shoulder injury.
"Today was a big step for Connor," said Kreiter. "He had a big match in the semis with the kid who finished sixth at state last year (Burlington's Devon Feltus), and really showed some growth in battling from behind to win 8-7. He really hasn't been tested this year, and this is exactly what he needed. Today was a big confidence boost for him.
"Adam and Walt also continued to wrestle well. Just in the last couple of weeks Adam is starting to hit his stride, and you can really see him cranking up the intensity in the practice room. As for Walt, he just goes out and dominates. The Mirocha kid is probably deserving of the Outstanding Wrestling award, but Walt was just as deserving. He just keeps rolling along."
While the Lancers' big three made it to the top of the podium, they weren't alone when it came to claiming top-six finishes.
Sophomore Bryce Sellers raised his record to 14-4 with a strong second-place finish at 160, while senior Tanner Anderson improved to 15-5 by finishing third at 135. Finishing fourth for the Lancers were seniors Garrett Seligman (125), Connor Paulsen (140) and Stephen Liske (189), along with sophomore Ben Nagle (215) and junior T.J. Hamilton (285).
Junior Josh Vance was fifth at 152 while juniors Tanner Everding (119) and Drake Epkes (130), along with senior Greg Kramer (145) were sixth.
"We were the only team that had all 14 guys place, so that was a big key," said Kreiter. "We talked about that going in. We really thought if we could place all 14, we'd have a good shot. We were right in the mix, but just didn't have a strong enough finish. If we'd have won two or three of those matches in the consolation rounds we could've vaulted past Bettendorf.
"Still, we can't be too disappointed. Scoring 200 points will win a lot of tournaments, and for the second year in row we tied for the most champs and had all 14 guys place. That's at least something to hang our hat on."
The good thing for the Lancers is they know how much work needs to be done in four weeks between now and the all-important district meet. Kreiter isn't worried. He knows his team is up for the challenge.
"Overall, I know we didn't wrestle our best," he said. "We most definitely would have liked to wrestle better, but it says something that we could finish third without our 'A' game. Plus, we now have four weeks to get even better, and I know that these guys will do that.
"A meet like this shows us where we're at and what we need to do to get where we want to be. It gives us a gauge. It's no secret that our top goal is to win a district title, and now we know it's within our grasp."
There's plenty of work to be done and the Lancers will get another test on Thursday when they get a chance at revenge when they travel to Assumption to take on the MAC champion Knights. That will be followed by another strong test at the always-tough Urbandale Invitational on Saturday.
" Right now on paper, we probably don't match up real well with Assumption," said Kreiter, "but the way we have to look at it is that we're going to have tough matches the rest of the year. Thursday will be a good test to see what we can do if we wrestle more aggressively.
"On Saturday we weren't as aggressive as we had been. We need to get back to that approach, where we take control of the match and not worry about what others are doing. We just have to do our own thing and we'll be OK. I still like where we're at. The kids are working hard and giving a good effort in practice. We'll be fine by the end of the season."
